What moves the quote
Six things that actually set a sod price
Sod quotes vary for knowable reasons. Here's each one, and which direction it pushes.
Variety choice
Bermuda to Zeon Zoysia spans the whole price range — and sunlight, not preference, should pick first. The variety guide is on our sod hub.
Condition of the old lawn
Stripping thin dead turf is quick; demoing a weed-matted jungle or hauling rock is not. The measure visit prices it honestly.
Why the old lawn died
If a leak or a dead zone killed it, that gets fixed first — or the new sod inherits the same fate at full price.
Grade changes
New grade means heads raised and arcs re-verified — included in our quotes, an invoice surprise in everyone else’s.
Access
Pallets weigh a ton apiece, literally. A gated backyard reached by wheelbarrow takes more labor than a front yard the forklift can kiss.
Project size
Per-square-foot rates improve with scale — mobilization is the same for 400 feet as for 4,000. Batching front and back usually beats two projects.
One rule, same as our repair side: the quote is flat and the invoice matches it. The measure visit exists so the number is right before pallets are ordered — not adjustable after they’re on your driveway.
Diagnosis guide
Typical projects, typical numbers
Six real project shapes and the range each usually lands in, installed.
Front yard refresh — ~2,000 sq ft
Four to five pallets: $[X,XXX]–$[X,XXX] in Bermuda, more in St. Augustine or Zoysia. The most common project we quote.
Full property — ~5,000 sq ft
Ten to twelve pallets: $[X,XXX]–$[X,XXX] depending on variety and demo. Per-foot pricing is at its best here.
Shade-loss conversion under trees
Replacing failed Bermuda with St. Augustine where the canopy won: priced like any install, plus an honest sun-hours check first — sometimes the answer is beds, and it’s free.
Post-freeze St. Augustine replacement
The 2021 special, still running: dead St. Augustine out, freeze-hardier Zoysia or Bermuda in where the sun allows. Demo of a fully dead lawn is the cheap kind.
Repair-area patch — a pallet or less
From $[XXX] matched to your existing variety — after trenching, utility cuts, or our own leak repairs.
New construction blank slate
No demo, clean grade: the best per-foot pricing on the menu — but builder-compacted clay still needs real prep, and skipping it is why builder lawns fail in year two.
Flat-rate pricing
The master sod rate table
Every repair is a flat rate quoted before work begins — never hourly, never a running meter while someone digs. The service call covers a full zone-by-zone diagnosis and applies to your repair, so diagnosis is effectively free when we do the work.
| Repair | Flat rate | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| On-site measure & flat quote | free | Square footage, sun map, access check, sprinkler coverage review. |
| Bermuda (Tifway 419), installed | $[X.XX]/sq ft · ~$[XXX]/pallet | Removal, prep, install, rolled and watered in. |
| St. Augustine (Raleigh/Palmetto), installed | $[X.XX]/sq ft · ~$[XXX]/pallet | Same full scope — the shade variety. |
| Zoysia (Palisades/Zeon), installed | $[X.XX]/sq ft · ~$[XXX]/pallet | Same full scope — the premium tier. |
| Sod-only patching | from $[XXX] | Pallet-or-less repairs matched to existing turf. |
Installed rates include removal, prep, installation, and watering-in at normal access; demo surprises and grading problems get priced at the measure, not after. Variety guidance lives on the sod installation hub.
Local knowledge
Installed vs. DIY — the honest math
A pallet of sod is cheap. A lawn is not. Here's where the installed price actually goes, so you can decide with real numbers.
What DIY really costs — beyond the pallets
Material runs roughly a third of an installed price — then the rest of the job shows up: sod cutter rental for the demo, haul-off of the old turf (heavier than you think; a 2,000 sq ft strip is a trailer problem), soil and grading work, and a long day of laying thousand-pound pallets one slab at a time before they cook on the driveway. Fit and motivated? It’s doable, and we’ll sell you nothing.
The failure mode isn’t laziness, it’s time: sod is produce, and pallets that sit two days in June root like it. Half-finished DIY weekends are a quote category of their own here.
What the installed price buys — the parts that decide
Demo and haul-off, grade corrected away from the slab, soil opened so roots can take, fresh-cut pallets laid the day they arrive, seams staggered and rolled — and the piece no sod-only crew offers: sprinkler coverage verified by a licensed irrigator before the order, heads raised to the new grade after. The grass is the visible 20%; the prep and the water are why it’s alive next August.
And the establishment plan, in writing, built for your city’s watering rules — because the cheapest way to lose the whole investment is week one without a plan.
Variety economics
Price vs. variety — what the tiers buy you
The per-foot spread between varieties is real money on a whole lawn. Here's what each tier is actually purchasing.
The tiers — cost against character
| Tier | What the money buys |
|---|---|
| Bermuda — the value tier | Lowest installed cost, fastest wear recovery, full-sun bulletproof. The catch: zero shade tolerance. |
| St. Augustine — the shade tax | The only real canopy grass — you’re paying for where it can live, plus higher water needs and freeze risk. |
| Palisades Zoysia — the durable premium | Dense, cold-hardy, moderate-shade capable. Costs more up front, asks less drama after. |
| Zeon Zoysia — the showpiece | Fine-bladed carpet, the highest tier — chosen on looks, and it delivers them. |
On a 2,000 sq ft yard the spread between tiers is hundreds, not thousands — which is why we price the variety question instead of letting the farm’s surplus decide it. Sun hours still vote first; the comparison lives on the sod hub.
Where quotes go wrong elsewhere
The classic sod-quote tricks, so you can spot them anywhere: a per-pallet price that quietly excludes demo and haul-off; “prep included” that means a rake pass over compacted clay; sprinkler damage from the demo billed back to you as an extra; and pallet-count guesses from satellite photos that strand the job short on a Saturday.
Our counters are structural: the measure is on site and free, the quote itemizes removal and prep, the sprinkler check is by the license holder, and the number you approve is the number on the invoice.

Questions
Sod pricing, asked & answered
How much does sod installation cost per square foot?
Installed — removal, prep, laying, and watering-in included — our rates run $[X.XX] per square foot for Tifway 419 Bermuda, $[X.XX] for Raleigh or Palmetto St. Augustine, and $[X.XX] for Palisades or Zeon Zoysia at normal access. Larger projects improve the per-foot number; the exact figure is one flat quote after a free measure.
How much is a pallet of sod installed?
A pallet covers about 450 square feet, which puts installed pallet math at roughly $[XXX] for Bermuda up through $[XXX] for premium Zoysia — including the demo and prep that pallet-only prices quietly leave out. Material alone runs about a third of those numbers.
How much does it cost to sod a typical front yard?
A 2,000 sq ft front yard — the most common project we quote — runs four to five pallets and lands around $[X,XXX]–$[X,XXX] installed depending on variety and the condition of what we're removing. Front-and-back together prices better per foot than two separate projects.
Why do sod quotes vary so much between companies?
Scope, mostly: the low quote often excludes demo, haul-off, real soil prep, or sprinkler adjustments — each of which returns as an extra or as a lawn that fails in year two. Compare quotes by what's itemized, not by the bottom line, and ask specifically who raises the sprinkler heads to the new grade.
Is it cheaper to install sod myself?
On materials, yes — pallets run about a third of installed cost. The rest is a sod cutter rental, haul-off of surprisingly heavy old turf, soil work, and laying thousand-pound pallets the same day they arrive, because sod is produce. Fit and motivated, it's a real option; half-finished DIY weekends are also a quote category we know well.
Does the price include removing my old grass?
Ours does — removal, haul-off, grade correction, and soil prep are in the per-foot rate at normal conditions, and anything unusual (rock, roots, a weed jungle) gets priced at the measure, not discovered on your invoice. “Installed” prices that exclude demo aren't installed prices.
Which variety is cheapest — and is cheapest right?
Bermuda installs cheapest and is genuinely the right answer for full-sun yards. It's the wrong answer under trees, where it thins and dies regardless of price — there the “shade tax” of St. Augustine is cheaper than replacing Bermuda twice. Sunlight picks the shortlist; budget picks within it.
Do bigger projects get better pricing?
Yes — mobilization, demo equipment, and delivery cost the same for 400 feet as for 4,000, so per-foot rates improve with scale. If front and back both need help, quoting them together is the honest money-saver we'll suggest ourselves.
Are sprinkler adjustments included in the price?
In ours, yes — and it's the line that separates us. New grade means heads raised and arcs re-verified, done by the Texas Licensed Irrigator (LI0026061) quoting the job. Sod-only crews bill sprinkler damage back as an extra or leave heads buried under the new turf. See sprinkler head repair.
When is sod cheapest to install?
Prices are steadier than people expect — sod farms cut year-round here. The real seasonal money is in establishment risk: spring installs root fast and forgive mistakes; high-summer installs work but burn water; and winter installs sit dormant, which in Frisco means hand-watering through the spray ban. We'll tell you what your timing buys and costs.
Is there a charge for the quote?
No — the on-site measure and flat quote are free. We measure precisely, map the sun, check access and the sprinklers, and the number arrives in writing. It doesn't move after approval.
Can I just get a small patch priced?
Yes — pallet-or-less patches matched to your existing variety start at $[XXX], common after trenching, utility work, or our own leak repairs. Matching the cultivar matters; we'll ask for a photo of your existing grass.
How fast can I get a quote?
Usually within a couple of days. Call (469) 970-2715 or send the square footage through the form; measure visits take under an hour.
